Your comment about the backup being written whenever you load new data from an SD card worries me, if that implies that the backup is usually in the same location as the other copies. If I may add one observation about your backup (with apologies if this is something you understand perfectly well and already address): Thank you all very much for your feedback. My needs will dictate how long the Mini will survive. The future will bring much more capable machines but they do not exist yet. I trust it will work and will be easier and faster to work than with my old Mac Pro □ After editing I update what is inside the NAS with final edited exported files, also on the backup and delete the files from the Mini to keep using and a scratch disk. Will buy a NAS for my most needed HDDs and redundancy and keep my backups with CCC and external HDDs via a dock.Īn internal disks as a scratch disk is the fastest way to edit and Capture One 21 likes the catalogues on the same place as the app itself so MM M1 16GB/1TB will be my choice.Įverytime I upload a new SD card with a new project, I will do it simultaneously to my scratch disk inside the Mini, my NAS and a backup as usual. Also I prefer a proper calibrated display like the Eizo for my photography. The Mini exists que iMac is a rumor and I need a machine NOW to work. I'm using Affinity Photo along with Topaz Gigapixel, DeNoise, & Sharpen for my edits. I also keep 3 rotating backups always with one remote. I always keep copies of the original files and the edited files (sometimes multiple copies of edits as I sometimes stretch my creativity). The editing process is made on the OWC drive for this you make copies from the HDD to the OWC drive? Which applications are you using for editing?Īfter editing you have two versions your files? Send the edited files back to the HDD and keep both? I also bought stuff from OWC, but not drives. Memory Card -> Photo folder (Date/subject) -> Editing -> Completed folders sorted by Date/Subject I keep backups of both on a 3rd drive (i don't want to lose those old pics or my restoration work). I move whichever old photo onto the work drive. I'm scanning them into a temporary folder on a USB 3 HDD. I'm currently restoring old family photos. I was lucky & got them as a combination sale. I'm using the Envoy Express Thunderbolt enclosure with the OWC Aura P12 Pro 1TB NVMe SSD. My scratch/work disk is from Other World Computing. Now with an external drive for editing how do you do from the SD card forward? □ Other apps (DxO or Affinity) do not work with catalogues, so all the editing is done from where the raw files are stored. Apart from this I only kept Capture One catalogue inside my system disk a pcie ssd. Raw files and exported tiff+jpg were always in the same disk/ From here to external backups. My scratch disk was one of the internal Mac Pro disks. How is exactly your workflow with that external scratch disk? Which drive did you choose as your scratch disk I am considering the same? A lot of my files were 80MB-1GB in photoshop I rocked a base iMac from 2012 until 2016, and it did ok with D600 files for the most part. she got the 16GB version, and that thing is faster in a lot of aspects than my mid 2015 i7 MBP. My wife bought a new MBA with the M1 chip. If, once announced, you want an M1 iMac, you can sell the Mini (keep the t-bolt drive as it should remain compatible). If you can't wait, get a Mini & add an external Thunderbolt drive (as a scratch disk). Apple does have the World Wide Developers Conference that usually happens in June.īest advice I can give is if you want the iMac form factor & can wait 2-3 months, do so. There was a rumored March event that never appeared which is now rumored for April. When will these new models be released - only Apple knows. A new form factor is rumored (24" & 30") along with bumped up processors (M1X, M2? with 8 performance/ 4 efficient cores). However, currently build to order 21 inch iMacs (w/ ssd upgrades) no longer being available (built) would seem to indicate new ones will be arriving. My current setup is considerably faster than the old one & I only do photo editing.Īpple is notoriously secretive regarding upcoming releases. At the time the waiting time for 16 GB version was months. I had been using a 2008 Mac Pro which finally died just after the introduction of the M1 Macs. I'm using an M1 Mini 8/256 with a 1 TB NVMe SSD connected via one of the Thunderbolt ports to use as a scratch disk/cache/working files. Mac Mini 2020 or iMac 2021 for photo editing?.
